Visual Culture in the Mass Media
This is an opportunity to examine your visual culture, especially the mass media portion of it. What kind of clothing do you wear, what type of fast food do you eat, and what kind of electronics do you purchase? How do you think that marketing and advertising play a role in what your consume? How does the design of a product's logo influence what you wear? How do you think that these companies target you as their consumer? This is your chance to look deeper into yourself as a consumer and gain a stronger understanding of why you make the choices in your purchases.

I don't really care what clothing I wear. I normally wear either band shirts or sports shirts, so I don't really care. I don't usually eat fast food but when I do, I eat either Burger King or Taco Bell. I have basically the new technology sort of. But I don't get these because of advertisement, I get them because my friends have them and I like them as well and decide to buy them. Advertising doesn't really rule me, I just buy items because my friends have them and I think it is cool and worth the money.
I purchase no electronics. My favorite fast food place is McDonalds. I mainly wear sports clothing like jerseys.

wearing name brand clothes is important so i dont get made fun of. and i like wearning name brand clothes because it makes me feel good and confedent

i always wear a band shirt, and tight jeans and a silver beaded necklace. i dont eat that much cuz im either to busy playing video games to cheap... or to lazy to go make the food. but when i do eat at fast food restaruants i usually go to McDonalds or Taco Bell.i have a xbox 360, computer, 2 tv's ps2,mp3, psp.(i'd like kill myself if i didnt have my video games >.> and electronics.)i get the stuff i get cuz i like it.. i dont relaly care what other people think of things... advertising usually makes me want things less cuz advertisments make things look crappy and when i buy something i make sure i get the play time or use out of it. - Aaron thompson
I wear different types of clothing whatever looks good I love fast food but dont eat it often because its really bad for you
i dont really care about video games because i like going outside and hanging out with my friends and chillen and stuff. and i dont have to have the new game that came out.

I don't really wear a certain name brand of clothing.
I need my ipod, digital camera and cell phone.
I don't watch much tv so advertising doesn't really affect me.

I usually wear jeans and a hoodie when its chilly or cold outside. My favorite fast food place to eat at is subway or burger king. Advertising and marketing plays a small role in what I consume or wear because if it looks good or like it would be a decent buy then I will most likely buy it. I think the companies just advertise what looks good and what they think teenagers would spend their money on.
I usually wear Hollister and Abercrombie. I like all fast food Burger King, Dairy Queen, McDonalds, etc. I don’t really buy electronics. Well the people that wear Abercrombie and Hollister are usually preps with good taste I like to look nice everyday so I wear that. Fast food targets me as a consumer because when I’m hungry and I’m driving around I have a weakness to not buy something to eat.
I wear clothing I like. It doesn’t matter where it’s from. Fast food I would eat is Subway or Wendy’s. Electronics I have purchased is my cell phone and mp3 player. Marketing and advertising would play a part in what electronics I buy or fast food I eat because if I see a really sweet phone on a commercial, I’m going to want to buy it and if I see a commercial for subway with a new sandwich that looks really good, I will probably want to go to subway and buy it. I don’t think the logo really influences what you wear, unless you are really into name brands. I think companies target teens as consumers because they know they will pay the extra money for the label just to fit in.
I’m a pretty casual kid when it comes to clothing. I usually wear tight jeans and a shirt. I’m pretty predictable. I’ll buy clothes from anywhere as long as they’re nice, name brands don’t bother me the least bit. I try to avoid fast food, but if I’m traveling or in a hurry, I would usually choose Burger King or Wendy’s. Marketing and advertising doesn’t personally affect me. I buy want I want, reguardless what advertisements say. My opinion is the companies are trying to lur you in to buying their products. They make it sounds as if buying their products is “the cool thing to do”. That’s a negative.

I usually don’t really care what I wear unless I’m going somewhere and I have to look nice. If I really don’t feel like getting dressed I’ll go out the house in sweats or pajamas. I’ve got the attitude that I don’t really care what people think of me I am who I am and if you don’t like it, it won’t hurt me. I don’t really eat that much fast food and if I do I’ll eat Burger King, McDonalds, or Wendy’s. When I buy electronics I’ll buy whatever is cheap and it also has to be something that I know will work for awhile. Marketing and advertising play a role in what I buy because they let me know what’s in and what the cheapest product out there is. The logo on a product doesn’t really effect what I wear because I don’t really buy that much name brand clothing (its too expensive). Most companies try to make the products sound cool and make it sound like everyone out there is buying that product just so I’ll buy it.

I usually wear name brand clothing not for any particular reason, but just because it’s their and I really don’t care what I wear. I eat Wendy’s because it’s cheap and really good, I buy a lot of electronics from a laptop to an Xbox. Usually what I hear from my peers matters more than seeing the product on the web or on the television. The logo really doesn’t affect how much I use or purchase the product at all they probably target me as a life-long buyer because if they get me hooked on their products now then I’ll be buying for quite some time considering my age.
I wear name brand clothing; I like to eat at Wendy’s because it’s close to my house, I purchase electronics such as an Xbox or Xbox360. The design of the logo doesn’t matter to me as long as it looks normal. They would probably say I am a good consumer because I buy there clothing or whatever they are advertising.
I usually wear hollister cloths because they look good and a very comfortable.I eat a lot of fast food. Taco Bell is my favorite because their food taste really good. I buy everytype of elecronic that can keep me entertained. I have a media player, computer and some video games. I don’t really notice advertising in what I buy. The only thing it really does is get me to notice the product. I don’t care what the logo is as long as it looks good. I think these companys target us as a consumer is by our age and what we are interested in.
The clothing I wear is mostly name brand things like Hollister, No boundaries, Aeropastale, American Eagle and South Pole. I only eat from two kinds of fast food restaurants, Taco Bell and Sheetz. The things I have purchased lately that are electronics are my i-pod, digital camera and laptop. They convince the younger teens and younger adults to buy these kind of things by different kind of slogan like” It’s the new hot thing” or “You need to buy it now or else”. If you think its awesome or cute then why not buy it? Right? Right! They target us ” teens “ because we’ll buy what ever they say is hot or is at a reasonable price.
I think that advertisement has some affect on people but not as much as an influence as peers. When you are with your friends and they have something that you don’t your going to experiment with it and if you like it odds are … your going to buy it. But, on the other hand marketing has to have an affect on at least one person b/c the first person to have had to have known about it somehow. But flashy light and cool looking products don’t hurt either. Advertising play s a role in what we eat, buy, and wear because in advertising they know how to get your attention.
I wear clothes that just look clean and nice. Marketing and advertising is a huge reason teens purchase what they purchase. Commercials for K-Swiss, Plato’s Closet, and many more, are very influencing to teens. Personally, the logo design on clothing doesn’t matter, however most teens want to be seen in the best clothes. Even if that means buying outrageously priced clothing items. Clothing companies, Fast food companies, Magazines, etc. target teens in many ways. One big way is through the teen powerhouse company, Myspace. MySpace is perhaps the biggest phenomena to hit the youth generation since the launch of MTV. With over 47,000,000 MySpace members as of Jan 2006 (and growing by an estimated 150,000 members a day), any marketer who targets teens just needs to buy some advertising space and their product will be a hit. Yahoo has 11,400 full time employees. Its industry is internet information providers. It’s not a good investment because its stock prices have been going down over the years.
Ralph Lauren is a parent company because it bought Ralph Lauren footwear. It would be a good investment because its stock prices have been going up over the years.
AT&T is a parent company. It wouldn’t be a good investment because its prices have been about the same over the past few months.
Nike is a parent company. Its subsidiaries are Cole Haan, Nike Bauer Hockey, Hurley International and Converse. It would be a good investment because its products are in demand and its stock prices keep on rising.
Apple is a parent company. Its subsidiaries are apple Computer Inc. and Filmmaker Inc. It is a good investment because its stock prices have been increasing rapidly.
Taco Bell is owned by Yum! Franchising. Its sister companies are A&W, KFC, and Pizza hut. It would be a bad investment because its stock prices have a lot of variation from low prices to high prices
I really don't care what brand of clothes i'm wearing. But I do like to wear South Pole brand clothing. I don't eat fast foods, but if I do it would have to McDonalds.
When it comes to me and clothing I love a bargain. I mostly wear graphic Tees, shorts, jeans, and dressy stuff. As for fast food, well I try not to touch it. You see I’m allergic to most of the “preservatives” put in the products they sell. Once every few months I’ll have an Arby’s or KFC. As for electronics, well I am a gamer so money dose go to new games for the PS2, Wii, and DS. I also love my iPod so I’m always monitoring the latest models and gadgets for it. I also love to do video editing so a lot of money went to that along with video converters to load VHS and DVD footage onto my computer to edit. I do every thing from home movies and green screening to AMV’s (Anime Music Video). I think advertising and marketing play a huge role in what I buy! Let’s say Kohels is having a sale on men’s apparel, heck I’m there. I can stock up and save a bunch. I admit I do have certain brands I enjoy. I find commercials for new cars and electronics very powerful in attracting my attention to new goodies out on the market. Another thing in marketing is when a store compares. I may go in looking for a certain brand of laptop and see on the website a cheaper unit that offers more. As for the logo, well that can be very powerful in today’s world. Companies tend to stamp there logo all over the product weather it be clothing or a car. We like to see cool, sleek logos that catch the eye, but not too much. Companies know that were the generation of the 00’s. We live in a world of fingerprint scanning car and house locks and robot house cleaners, things are parents grew up watching in Sci-Fi movies. We like things hip and sleek, chrome is in and style is bold, and companies know this.

1. Microsoft is a parent company. Other subsidaries of Microsoft are Alacris Inc., aQuantive Inc., Avanade Inc., and ContentGuard Inc.
2. Adidas is a parent company. other subsidaries of Adidas are Reebok International Ltd., and TaylorMade-(Adidas golf).
3. Taco Bell is a fast food chain (subsidary). Taco Bell is a division of YUM! Brands.
I usually wear name brand shirts but that is just because I like the way they look. If I see a shirt that isn’t name brand I would still wear it if it looks good. Shorts shirts jeans I hardly ever buy name brand because they are too much money. I usually eat at the bigger names in fast food because that’s what I grew up eating. They might not have the best food out there but I don’t want to take a chance of wasting my money on something I might not like. I usually buy the electronics that aren’t real cheap because then they are probably not very good and will break easily. I think advertising has a pretty big role in what people buy but not the only thing people base what they buy on. So a company just can’t have an awesome advertisement then not have a good product. Logos don’t influence what I buy at all. The clothing just has to look good to me. I’m not sure how they target me as a consumer.
I don't really care what clothes I wear.
I buy electronics from what my friends or family say about them.
I wear warm clothes in the winter. And light clothes in the summertime. I eat all types of fast food daily (to stay skinny). I purchase top of the line electronics. I think marketing and advertising help sell products to the consumers and with more advertisements people will consume more. The design and logo influence greatly on the clothing I wear. Companies target me as their consumer by advertising.
I dont care what clothes i wear but its usally band shirts or adidas.I dont eat fast food.I buy electronics by what my friends say about them.
Clothing, I usually wear clothes that have brand names such as Hollister, Aeropostle, American Eagle, Abercombie, and such, but I also wear sweats every so often and unbranded clothes such as things from Kohl’s.
Fast Food, I usually try to stay away from the fast food to eat because as we all know it is not good for us but it tastes good so every so often I’ll eat at Taco Bell, Quizno’s, Subway, and Dairy Queen and I try to stay away from McDonalds but sometimes I cannot resist.
Electronics, as for electronics, I have an IPod but I don’t really go out to the store and buy anything to have to do with it. I don’t really buy stuff dealing with electronics unless its little things for my cell phone but I rarely even buy those things.
I think marketing and advertising are a major role of what we purchase because I know if I saw a cute shirt on TV I would go out to the store and buy it. They make us aware of what is popular and what is not. The logo of what you wear can’t afford to be ugly if there was a logo such as a fish I probably wouldn’t wear it just because it’s not as appealing. I think these companies see we have money to spend and make products that we would want to buy. I make the purchases I buy because in this world it’s all about how you look and how people see you from your appearance or that’s what I think it’s like to me. Buying the things you do make people see the person who you are on the inside also.

Dairy Queen is a subsidiary company. Berkshine hathaway is the main owner for Dairy Queen. It also owns Russell, Geico Corporation, national Indemnity, Mclane company, Clay homes, Mid American Energy holding, Business wire and gerenal rc. I would recommend Dariy Queen because there shocks look high.
Taco Bell is a subsidary company. Yum brand is the main owner of it. Yum brand also owns KFC, pizza hut, Long John Silvers and A&W root beer. I would recommend you to buy a shock on Taco Bell because the shock charts are looking pretty good.
Adidas is a parent company to Taylor Made. Taylor Made sponsors players on the PGA. The shocks and charts are looking high so I would also recommend this one.
I wear clothes from Abercombie & Hollister. I like to eat a lot of fast food, like McDonalds, Burger king, Taco Bell, DAIRY QUEEN! i don’t really buy a lot of electronic. But I like playing video games. I think advertisment affects it a little bit, for somethings. I think food advertisment get people to go try there stuff but I don’t think clothes advertisments get you to buy there stuff. I just like the clothes I wear because I like how they look and how they fit. They target me as a consumer because I like how they make there clothes and for fast food I just love food so that’s why.
i really dont care about the type of clothing i wear im just really picky when it comes to buying shoes. If they get dirty i go crazy i usually spend at least 100 dollars on a pair of shoes.
I don’t fell name brand matters. As far as I am concerned it depends more on the quality of the product. If I buy a name brand shirt and it falls apart I wont buy it again if I buy an off brand shirt and it falls apart I wont buy it again. I’ll pay more if the product is worth it but if I can buy something just as good for not as much I will it all depends on how good it works and how long it works that good.

I like to wear name brand clothes, like hollister and abercrombie. I like to eat at Arby's. I have alot of sony products at my house. Marketing and advertisement play a big roll, because if its advertised as popular ill go see if i like it and if i do i will purchase it. If a produsts logo is creative, colorful, and stands out it will catch my eye.

I wear any clothing that is comfortable it does not have to be a certain name brand. I eat almost any kind of fast food but limit myself because it is so unhealthy I do not purchase any electronics. If I see a good advertisment that catches my eye I will want to but the product. A certain logo does not make me want a certain brand.

The type of clothing that I wear depends on what the name brand is. Like if its something from Walmart or K-mart I am probally not going to wear it. Its weird why I think like that because clothes are clothes but name brands are everything. I mean the clothes I wear are Hollister and American Eagle because there the most popular. The type of food I eat really doesn’t play a significant role in my decision. I mean its usually what im hungry for I get. Other than that though, Marketing and advertising play big roles in what consumers purchase. I mean some people would never be seen wearing a Marcs shirt. Companies target you with basically everywhere you go. I mean you have tv ads, radio commericials, and even billboards with there advertisements.
I mainly wear clothes from American Eagle because their cute, and made nice, not because of the logo on the clothing. I rarely eat fast food but when I do I eat burger king or subway. I don’t buy electronics. Marketing and advertising plays a role in what I consume because they usually advertise when they have a sale or when they get new products in.
I wear a combination of preppy clothing and fun clothing, for example from Forever21 and Wet Seal. I will eat any kind of fast food but my favorite place is Burger King. Electronics I purchase are mostly cd’s, ipod’s, and anything to do with playing cd’s like boom box and player for your car. Marketing definitely plays a role on what you consume because I know when I see or hear about a product on tv with a cool advertisement that makes me want to go out and get it. If a product has a catchy logo, then you are most likely to want to buy that product. They build their advertisement around the age group that the product is fit for, for example if a company is trying to sell barbies, they will make a comercial that will catch a little girls eye.
When I purchase food I get what is good and what we fill me up, when I buy clothing I buy what I think looks good on me not what the brand of logo says or even what ever one else has, electronics I buy what a want like a cell phone or stereo. To some people advertising may play a big role in what the buy are even what they say they need. I am not going to say that advertisement or logos do not play a role in my life, but they really do not play a big role in my life. The way I think companies work is they set advertisements saying “this is the new look all the kids are wearing”. Then everyone wants that product because they want to fit in or even want to be like. But the main reason is that they want to be like everyone else!
I wear different types of clothes like south pole, hanes shirts. The type of fast food I eat would be McDonalds, Taco Bell, Burger King. And I don’t really have any electonics like an ipod or anything. If I like the logo or know the logo I would probably go and look for what nice things they have there. They send out ads on the tv to have go and buy something from there store and the post ads just about everywhere like on bulletin boards.
To me it don't really matter what kind of clothing I wear. Sometimes i wear name brand clothes but to me I'll just wear whatever.Sometimes I'll eat fast food and the only things i eat is Taco Bell and McDonalds. The technology's that I have are Ps2,Xbox 360,and my cell phone.
I really dont care about name brands when i buy clothing. i just get what i like and what is comfortable. My favorite fast food restaraunt is probably taco bell. I dont really buy electronics. Advertising and logos dont affect what i buy. I just buy what i like.
Charlie G.
I usually wear Adidas, Nike, and other sports clothing. I usually like Burger king or subway. I purchase cell phones, iPod, and computers from an electronic store. Marketing and advertisings play a role in my purchase is that if you see something really cool that you want in an ad or somewhere else it makes you want it more so then you go and buy it. I think that the products logo does not effect what I wear at all. I think these companies target us by our age groups.
I don’t really wear a certain clothing brand. I just wear whatever I like. Taco Bell is my favorite fast food place. But I like a lot of different places. The only kind of electronics that I buy would be CDs. I mostly listen to country so that’s pretty much the only kind I buy. I think that marketing and advertising play a big role in what I consume because if I didn’t know about them I wouldn’t know what to buy. A design of a products logo doesn’t influence what I wear because I don’t really care what I buy, as long as I like it. Companies target me as a consumer by showing us mostly the good things with their products but not the bad things.
Amber
I don’t really buy certain name brands if its cute I’ll buy it. I eat at Taco Bell, Arby’s, Wendy’s, and Burger King. I have an mp3 player, a cell phone, and I just got an am/fm, CD player with an mp3 hook up for my car. Marketing doesn’t really play a role in what I buy I don’t watch commicals I change the channel when ever the come on unless it’s the super bowl commercials. I got my mp3 player because it was cheaper than an IPod and holds the same amount of songs I got my phone because its pay as you go and the phone was free, its a tracphone and the don’t really advertise. I got the radio because my boyfriend’s dad sells them and I liked them and he gave it to me for free. If it’s a cool design for the logo I’ll probably buy it. Companies target me buy only telling us the good things about them, and showing celebrities who have them.
I wear nike, Adidas, and US polo assign., I like to eat Subway and Wendys, The only type of electronics I really buy are DVD’s and XBOX 360 games. I don’t think that advertising plays a major role in what I buy because I don’t usually run out and buy something the minute I see it. The logo doesn’t really affect what kind of clothes I wear either unless I like the design of the logo with the product, the only thing a logo does is make it so I can identify a product. I think companies like Nike and Adidas target people that play sports like me.
I think that advirtisements play a huge role in what people choose to buy. If there is a commercial that makes a particular item look "cool" then it is more likley to be bought. Also, if a certain item is marketed to adults, it won't look "cool" to teenagers and therefore teenagers will not buy it. Another thing that does play a part in what people buy are the logos or brands. Different brands carry different images and the more popular image will get bought more. Especially if the logo that is attached is "cool" looking.
- emily
In the matter of clothing I don't care much about brand names. If I buy fast food I might pay attention to the commerials to see new foods that they might have or deals that they are offering (example additions to the dollar menu/the new monopoly game at McDonalds). I buy electronics mostly once a week. I don't pay attention to ads but look online for people's overall thought of the product and if what I'm buying will be worth my time and money. Video games computer tools and other things are some of the electronics that I buy.
The design of a product’s logo does not influence me on what to wear. This company’s try to influence me by the way that they advertise there items. They advertise in a way that is appealing to the younger generation. I buy clothes that I like and feel comfortable in wearing and I don’t go to places like American Eagle because their clothes cost a lot and I don’t like spending lots of money on one piece of clothing when I can get more clothes from else where.

I don't care really what I wear but I like expensive products. My favorites are Louis Vuitton, Coach, Burberry, Tiffany's, Jimmy Choo, and Heatherette. I love Mr. Hero's, McDonalds, Subway, Arby's but I dont like Burger King. I have an ipod, a computer, a digital camera and a cell phone. Marketing plays a big role in what I consume because I see things I'll like in a commercial or something. The design of a logo isn't much of a deal to me but when I have a Louis Vuitton purse or a Coach purse... I like to get the logo on the purse. I think companies target age groups by researching what teens are into. If they have good music in their ads than I'm more liable to watch or read that ad. If the ad is attention grabbing or pertaining to me... I would want to watch or read the ad. If the ad doesn't grab my attention... I won't read it.
I usually wear american eagle clothes, urban outfitter purses, steve madden shoes, and Dior sunglasses. I ususally just grab wendy's or Mr. Hero, but I prefer to eat at resteraunts. I buy dvd's all the time and i purchase itune's every day. I think marketing and advertising play a huge role in what we consume it surrounds everyday we are going to take notice. If a brand has a cool logo it stands out and people like to be recognized, if its mundane people won't notice it, and they wont care. They target us by engulfing us in their product through the t.v , radio, and magazines.
